BOOKS In Morocco!!!

http://rabat.unesco.org/unfinal/IMG/pdf/unesco_clt_05_fr.pdf

This link over here, is one of the rare sites that talks about books and the emergence of books in Morocco. It is an article written by UNESCO so a reliable source. It is related to what we have seen in class, about books and the division of publishers as we have studied in chapter 6. For example, we can remark that between 2003 and 2004 more than 33% of the publication were about management( gestion in french). Unfortunately, this article is in french again because most of the publication about our Country are in french.
Moreover in this article, we can read about the evolution of lot of categories of  production. Also, it talks about the different languages published in Morocco and their distribution.
An observation that i want to share with you is that Morocco still has to do a progress because there is a huge difference between other countries comparing the numbers of books published. I can even say that is not comparable. Morocco is improving but should more focus on education, books... ( my personal point of view)

Enjoy,

The end of print

I found an interseting video about the end of print so I suggest you watch it. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6191633169048793874
do you think that for the next generation the print press will wanish ?

Morocco: Journalistic maturity needed

http://www.moroccoboard.com/viewpoint/60-ahmed-tb/651-morocco-journalistic-maturity-needed

yellow journalism

http://www.lavalleystar.com/sections/opinion/yellow-journalism-still-has-an-audience-1.2256417

This article is a form of yellow journalism under the category self promotion and human-interested stories.
apparently a news agency paid a mother to stage like she was giving her 8year old daughter botox, and recieved $200. however they recieved a lot of publicity what they originally wanted anyway, and made it a joke for "Good Morning America". Yellow Journalism is still used today.

Freedom of Expression

While I was reading the article, Media in Morrocco especially Journalism I got sympathized with the writer. However, I had another point of view. If any one of us was crossing a mendicant in the road, wouldn’t he or she be giving him money or some help of another kind? That may mean that I am discouraging him from having his or her own employment, or helping him or her until s/he find her own. However, it might not be the case; we as Muslims, as supposed to be, tend to have that spirit of mercy and empathy towards others, the love of giving and forgiving.
To illustrate the case more vividly, I may be calling upon that the caricature of the prophet Mohamed or the one of the king Mohamed VI. Why would I harm anybody in anyway, while I want nobody to touch me even in the fairest way? My freedom stops there where your freedom begins. Rather than this jeopardy of expression, all I can recall about this person is that since his leadership in morocco, we have seen a great change in morocco, and I should be acknowledging that: economically, socially, politically,… we have seen that the Moroccan citizen has come to fit and live adequately in his/her environment compared to before, comprehensively. I am saying that because that is what I know, I don’t want him to give me charity and I will not be afraid of him if I had the opposite to say; but I will owe him respect as I respect myself. I don’t mean by that we have reached our comfortable seats of wellbeing; we are still in our embryonic stage of development but we needn’t to burn stages feeling it easy to blame only the others. We, Moroccans, as a population holds also 60% of the responsibility, we are a lazy and unproductive society, and as we say in our Moroccan dialect “we want everything without doing anything”; and that is another subject.
Many of us perceive the government (the parliament) and the king to be one entity moving in the same harmony and having the same objectives- at least what 2M and RTM tries to persuade us about. However, they tend to forget that each may be pulling to different directions: some may be looking for paralyzed morocco, a sheep population in order to reign and benefit from the many of its resources. Others may be just negotiating about a suitable context to avoid provoking national chaos. Many of us generalize the blame without knowing, because it easy to blame; it is “to open mouths”.
To conclude I will just say, that the notion of freedom of expression may be exploited by some entities to actually manipulate the “masses”*, not to make them aware about their welfare. Then those masses happy be to be given the chance of feeling heroes, blindly, subliminally follow a revolutionary spirit and action without knowing.
*I have utilized the word masses, because as long as we follow some instinctive reflex ions, carefully studied and deducted by some elite’ sociologist centuries ago, we are elevated to say nothing but masses.

Internet: how much of a mass communication tool is it really ?

i came across some interesting statistics that shows how much massive of a communication tool the Internet is. As of December 31,2011, the total worldwide population was of 6 930 055 145 people. 32.7% of the population has CONSTANT access to the internet, which is tremendous, which represents 2 267 233 472 people. For comparaison, only 360 985 492 persons were active internet users in 2000, which now represents a growth of 582.1%. Interestingly enough, although the largest amount of people is beleived to be in America, it is a false rumor, as Asia takes the biggest part of the "market" with 44.8% of the total internet users, followed by Europe 22.1% then North America, 12%. Africa "only" represents 6.2%, but it is already a enormous amount.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP59o758a74&feature=share

This video is very intersting, it shows the history of the world during 100 years! It also demonstrates how Mass Media has played a role in every single event that happened in the world as every event is covered through Mass Media; even thought I am chocked that they didn't talk about the Palestine- Isreali Conflict However the video is veryy intersting.

Mass Media Influence on Society

http://rayuso.hubpages.com/hub/Mass-Media-Influence-on-Society

This article talks about the influence of Mass Communication on society. It shows how media have evolved those past 50 years, and how media have an impact on teenagers.  Teenagers watch 40,000 ads each year, and the companies who create those ads use star branding  with celebrities that  push young people to consume more.

The First News Aggregator in Morocco

In computing, a news aggregator, also known as a feed aggregator, feed reader, news reader, RSS reader or simply aggregator, is client software or a Web Application which aggregates syndicated web content such as news headlines, blogs, podcasts, and vlogs in a single location for easy viewing.

http://ma.wibme.com/

Wibme is the first news aggregator in Morocco. It is a set of newsletters that make you follow all the news via the Internet.

http://www.bladi.net/

Bladi.net is another Moroccan news aggregator.

I personally think that we still don't have enough News Aggregators in Morocco compared to other countries around the world. Our country is still very far from the countries like France, United States, etc.

Hard news

This is a form of hard news that we were discussing in class this week. " if it bleeds it leads" My feelings towards this is very chaotic because you can't trust anybody, not even your family members. This was a event based upon a father wanting to see his son. Mothers and grandmothers should give the father the benefit of the doubt to want to in his child life. The mother in law had no right to shoot the father then lie to the police about it., jus sickening !!!!

Mass Media in the Grand Maghrib

http://www.reocities.com/Athens/ithaca/8257/maghrib.htm

This article discusses the development of the mass media in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

More Media, Less Reading.

In 1955 researchers began to ask people to keep diaries of how they spent every ten minutes of their free time. Reading on weekday evenings and weekends fell from five hours a week to 3.6, while television watching rose from about ten minutes a week to more than ten hours.
In fact nowadays we are reading less than people who were our age ten or twenty years ago.
People are now fed by the different ways of social networks: face book, twitter, Wiki leaks, or YouTube and in a world filled with technology and new innovations it became difficult to do a great intellectual activity in isolation. I always thought that spending several times in front of my computer reduced my focus and therefore it become difficult for me to read a book and stay focused on it for a long period of time unlike what I used to do while I didn’t had a personal computer. I used to enjoy reading without being interrupted by anything on my screen.
News, games and information are now reshaped on-line, and teenagers are more concerned about gossip and celebrities rather than what is happening in the world. Most of the media that is surrounding our generation do not promote knowledge and education «I’m not hearing of a dramatically big drop, but I would say the number of serious readers, the kids who used to come in and get 20 and 30 books - we're just not seeing that," said Caroline Ward, a children's librarian in Stamford.
Indeed, most of children now feel that reading is a duty and read only when something is assigned to them. Our generation did somehow lose the pleasure of reading.
I think that the most striking point is that reading is linked with other forms of social life; the less people read, the less they are concerned with voting, activism, charity, participation in culture and art which is really a shame. Knowing that reading will continue to fall and watching television will continue to rise; professors and parents should really start having a conversation with the kids before the media speaks to them.

Mass Media in transition

http://www.mcgraw-hill.com.au/html/9780073378886.html This book talks about how the traditional mass media are dealing with shrinking audiences, evaporating advertising revenue and increased competition from the Internet. The 11th edition brings students up-to-date on the latest developments in the media world including Facebook and other social media.

The Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Writing

This article shows the way of communication in Egypt decades ago; more specifically it shows the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. The Egyptian languages (also known as Copto-Egyptian) consist of ancient Egyptian and Coptic, and form a separate branch among the family of Afro-Asiatic languages. The Egyptian language is among the first written languages, and is known from hieroglyphic inscriptions preserved on monuments and sheets of papyrus. The Coptic language, the only extant descendant of Egyptian, is today the liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Hieroglyphs emerged from the preliterate artistic traditions of Egypt. For example, symbols on Gerzean pottery from ca. 4000 BCE resemble hieroglyphic writing. For many years the earliest known hieroglyphic inscription was the Narmer Palette, found during excavations at Hierakonpolis (modern Kawm al-Ahmar) in the 1890s, which has been dated to ca. 3200 BCE. The first full sentence written in hieroglyphs so far discovered was found on a seal impression found in the tomb of Seth-Peribsen at Umm el-Qa'ab, which dates from the Second Dynasty. In the era of the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom, about 800 hieroglyphs existed. By the Greco-Roman period, they numbered more than 5,000
this video talks about the impact of mass communication in the society and how mass media affects our political knowledge and also the tendency to have stereotype about different groups. There are many competing theories abou how media affects us. there is a theory that shows that the more people watch TV, the more they the violent and scary and dangerous they think the world is.

Tv media controls your MIND!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98IEcSodNUc&feature=related

Here is an interesting video that you all must check out, it relates to what we discussed in class previously,
showing how a simple human created device  control our mind and influence our reaction.  Imposing us to
absorb values and adopt values that are not ours. We should, as conscious human being  believe in our
critical thinking and the power of our self-control. TV can be useful for our personal entertainment but the
more saving consumer we are, the better we are preserved. As we have seen in class, media is control in LOt
of countries is controlled by governement, group  in different concept political and religious.. that want
to control us or do propaganda.

The Influence of Media in The 21st Century

This video is a mashup of the influence brought by the media these days and especially TV. Everything that is showed is true and can be interpreted by people in a lot of different ways. Watch and judge.

American Ad vs Moroccan Ad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXR3mPCzvEQ This is the video of a former introduction to mass communication class in AUI; I like this video because it shows really the intention of mass media to send a message. I loved the way this advertisement played a direct link with the present mass media communication.

The Transmission and Ritual View of Communication

The Transmission View

The transmission view of communication is the commonest in our culture--perhaps in all industrial cultures--and dominates contemporary dictionary entries under the term. It is defined by terms such as "imparting," "sending," "transmitting," or "giving information to others." It is formed from a metaphor of geography or transportation. In the nineteenth century but to a lesser extent today, the movement of goods or people and the movement of information were seen as essentially identical processes and both were described by the common noun "communication." The center of this idea of communication is the transmission of signals or messages over distance for the purpose of control. It is a view of communication that derives from one of the most ancient of human dreams: the desire to increase the speed and effect of messages as they travel in space...

The Ritual View

A ritual view of communication is directed not toward the extension of messages in space but toward the maintenance of society in time; not the act of imparting information but the representation of shared beliefs.
If the archetypal case of communication under a transmission view is the extension of messages across geography for the purpose of control, the archetypal case under a ritual view is the sacred ceremony that draws persons together in fellowship and commonality.
The indebtedness of the ritual view of communication to religion is apparent in the name chosen to label it. Moreover, it derives from a view of religion that downplays the role of the sermon, the instruction and admonition, in order to highlight the role of the prater, the chant, and the ceremony. It sees the original or highest manifestation of communication not in the transmission of intelligent information but in the construction and maintenance of an ordered, meaningful cultural world that can serve as a control and container for human action.....(18-19)

Note

As the article shows, there are two different versions of communication: The ritual and the transmission communication. The transmission one is the most used in our culture and in most of cultures around the world. The view of communication that interests me most is the ritual view. We all know the ritual communication as a religious part of communication and we all stereotype it as ceremonies that could happen on churches or things like that. In my opinion, ritual communication can be something else. I think that we can all create our own rituals, things that we can do with our family or friends like having a special night like for example: Video games night, Mexican meal night, etc. These are the kind of ritual that we as citizens in the 21st century are used to.

The influence of medias on masses

These last couple of weeks, this video has made a buzz on the web, especially, when we see the importance of the topic that it's treating. In fact, It's talking about the end of the United European Currency, and the consequences that might follow this decision. And seeing what's happening recently in Europe, this video looked true. However, it's just a Fiction, a Simulation.
If we get a little back to the past, to the 30th of October on 1938, we can see that something similar happened during the Era of dominance of the Radio Broadcasting. As a matter of fact, Orson G. Welles broadcast on CBS an adaptation of the novel "the War of the worlds" that created a huge panic in the american society at that time.
By seeing these two examples, we can see huge influence of media on the masses. In fact, they can easily set up the ideas of the population. In fact, it's mainly the media who set the norms for the population and furthermore, they are also the basis for their views.
I do think that we should think critically whenever media presents a bench of information to us. In fact, the media are not as independent as they might appear to be. Furthermore, they may also give biased information, of the disturbance in the process of communication may cause a huge misunderstanding that may lead to a huge panic.

The History of Hollywood: "The Hays Code"

The History of Hollywood: "Golden Age"

The History of Hollywood: "TV killed Hollywood "

The History of Hollywood: "Running from Edison"

The Big Picture : Hollywood History 101: Part 1

Hello everyone!
Seeing as how we are going to see the history of each media I hereby present you a very informative 4 part video about the beginning, fall and rise of Hollywood.
The first part deals with how Hollywood emerged and dominated.
The second part shows Hollywood's fall due to not adapting to its changing audience who have been converted by the emergence of television.
The third part is about the much lauded "Golden Age" of Hollywood where giants like Coppola, Lucas and Spielberg emerged.
The last part which is a supplement shows how censorship came to be and how it influenced past and future events. It also shows what we discussed in class about showing an audience things they wouldn't approve or understand.
If you liked these videos from MovieBob, head on to the escapist to watch more of his media related videos (Comic books, movies and video games) I assure you that Bob is a very fun critic and you won't feel bored watching his videos.

Hope you enjoy it!

Theoretical Analysis of Media

I was looking at the questions of critical thinking at the end of Chapter 2 “Perspective on Mass Communication “, and I found this following question: Can you find any more current examples of status conferral? Linkage? Media Dysfunctions? Then I did some researches about media dysfunctions, and I came across a nice topic about the theoretical analysis of media. I will share with the link and hope you can learn from it.

Social Media revolution

THE RADIO ACT OF 1927 AS A PRODUCT OF PROGRESSIVISM

Sunday, 5 February 2012

Mass media in Morocco: the actual state.

During the first decade of the twenty first century, the mass medias in Morocco have been widely developed, mainly by the emergence of the web 2.0 and also by the privatization of the sectors of Journalism and radio broadcasting. Then, in the last ten years we had a diversity of media that we would have never dreamed about by the end of the 90s.
In the newspapers field, we can remark the emergence of the private companies and the end of the monopoly of the politically-affiliated newspapers. This was a real revolution in Morocco as the public could have at least some objective news to read. Furthermore, some newspapers have seen in this action an evolution of the freedom of speech in the country, and they dared to talk about some social/political taboos.
Talking about the radio station field, it was a revolution as well. We witnessed the emergence of regional private radio stations. For example, the group MFM has invested in some regional stations so that they can deliver specific content to the listeners (Casa FM, Marrakech FM, MFM Sais...). Furthermore, we can also remark the emergence of new private radios on the national scale. In fact, we passed from one on the 90s to a dozen nowadays.
For the Television part, we can see the emergence of thematic channels. In fact, the SNRT, has diversified its offer by creating some new channels that can be classed according to their themes. In fact there are mainly 8 Channels  ( AlAoula: General, 2M: General , Arriadia: Sports , Arrabia : General Knowledge+Science ,Almaghribia : General (for the Moroccans Residing Abroad), the Mohammed VI channel : Coran and religion, the 7th : Cinema, The Eight broadcasting in Amazigh). We can also notice the shy participation for the private sector by one Channel that started as a news broadcasting channel then switched to general purpose : Medi1TV.
For the internet, the rate of penetration is 2% (http://www.leconomiste.com/article/le-taux-de-penetration-dinternet-au-maroc-est-de-2) which is really low. We don't have interesting User Generated content, except some blogs. However, the numbers in that sector are really growing fast.

Real Bad Arabs invading your TV

Hollywood has always been criticized of its repeated caricaturing of minorities through its movie production, starting by Afro-Americans, Jews, Native-Americans and most recently Arabs.
Middle-easterners were repeatedly flagged with terrorism, stupidity and richness. This attitude reflects the policy of corporations owning the movie studios, that prefer to be in harmony with the several administrations that have ruled the country, and not the opposite. The following documentary retraces the ways Arabs are pictured in Hollywood production since its early days and shows how this attitude led to the growth of hatred towards Middle-easterners.

The Influence of the Internet

The Illusion of diversity in today's media
Recently, I came across a very interesting video that has more about it than it shows. It is a 3 min video taken from a late night TV show hosted by American television host Conan O'brien, reporting on his decision to perform a Same-sex marriage between two of his colleagues live on his show. At first glance, one could only think of the video as being a TV blooper compilation, like the many we watch on the internet, yet what is intriguing about it is the fact that it clearly show us that even with the tremendous number of TV channels reporting on the polemic event, their reaction has in reality been the same.
This weird event shows that when an average viewer believe that he or she is given the choice of choosing which TV station to follow , he/she has been in fact only made victim of the the concentrated media market where companies such as CBS, CNN, or News Corp are buying competitor TV stations like an 8 year old child collecting postal stamps. Such companies simply use their massive network of local and national TV station to promulgate their messages more effectively than ever ( And God Knows what kind of message their are spreading), either with a similar tone like we saw on the video, or by simply reshaping them so as for average Joe to feel free in his choices. Viewers are simply sold the Illusion of choice at the cost of their own freedom.

Internet, segmentation and entertainment ... How does it really work ?

Hey guys , So the video I am sharing here is very interesting ( I am a huge fan of Tedtalks ) this one shows how the study of population has changed now thanks to social networks, so the media can target in a more precise way...the customers... Which means 'US' ... But also some other interesting facts... http://www.ted.com/talks/johanna_blakley_social_media_and_the_end_of_gender.html

Telecommunication in Morocco

- INWI is a telecommunication company in Morocco. After poor marketing, the former ONA WANA subsidiary of Holding, was given a face-lift, change of name, image, color and strategy. Following an agreement with the consortium Kuwaiti Zain / Ajial laying undertakes to 2.85 billion in exchange for 32% of the new company, on 23 February 2010 were released for marketing.

Maroc Telecom (Acronym: IAM) is the main telecommunication company in MoroccoIAM employs around 11,178 employees. It has 8 regional delegations with 220 offices present on all the territory of Morocco. IAM is controlled by Vivendi which has a 53% share of its capital.[1] The company is listed in both Casablanca Stock Exchange and Euronext Paris.

Méditel (or Médi Télécom) is one of three licensed telecommunications operators in Morocco. Its headquarters is based in CasablancaMéditel obtained the second license of mobile telephony in Morocco in 1999. It began its commercial operations on March 29, 2000. The initial ownership structure was composed of five shareholders: Portugal Telecom (32.18%), Telefónica (32.18%), FinanceCom, the first Moroccan financial group (18.06%), the Moroccan industrial group HoldCo (CDG + Akwa Group (17.59%). However, in September 2009, Portugal Telecom and Telefónica sold their stakes to local investors.[1] FinanceCom and CDG now own equal parts (50%). In 2010, France Telecom closed to buy 40 percent of Moroccan telecoms operator Meditel for 640 million euros ($840 million).

These are the three Moroccan telecommunication companies in Morocco with the definitions that anyone on the internet could find, but are they really Moroccan ? What do you think ?
