History of Moroccan Radio!!

This article talk about what we have covered in class but especially about the emergence of the Radio in our country. Indeed, one of the question was in the quiz.
The French were the first to start broadcasting in Morocco in February 1928, when radio signals were sent from the city Rabat with a two-kilowatt medium-wave transmitter.
Similarly, in the North of the country, the Spanish colonial power established Radio Dersa tetuan.
It is a really really interesting article that explain everything about the emergence of the radio in Morocco and its purpose for example, that Radio become of form of Moroccan communication and resistance against the French in their fight fir the independence.
That Nationalist leaders voiced their ideas from radio stations based in Spain and Italy.
As a response to this new situation, the French colonial power issued the Dahir of July 1929 to extend and define the scope of the monopolisation to include all signal transmission tools whether they are audio or visual, since the first Dahir was limited solely to telephony and telegraphy;

this article should be read by all of you if possible, cause it is really interesting to know about such history and the device that helped our country to be free today. Enjoy!!

Electronic News Media in Morocco

The development of the Internet has brought a new dimension to news reporting in Morocco. Many of the major dailies and weeklies can now be accessed on their own Web sites. The number of Internet users has dramatically increased to over 120,000 in 2002, with 8 Internet Service Providers (ISP) in operation. In 1996 the government created Mincom Ilaycom , a large official Web site with a search engine, for the purpose of disseminating official information about Morocco ( www.mincom.gov.ma ). It was followed by the launching of Marweb.com , another search engine and reference data bank particularly useful for its weekly review of the Moroccan press. In 2001 Morocco had 1,425,000 telephones (including 116,645 cell phones,) 27 AM and 25 FM radio stations (with 6.65 million sets), and 35 TV stations with 3.1 million TV sets. Satellite relays, optical cables, dish systems, and digital equipment now bring Arab, European, and American television programming into every region of the country.
Here are some statistics of communications in Morocco:
·         Radio Brodcast Stations: 58
·         Number of people with Radios: 6,640,000
·         Televison Broadcast Stations: 35
·         Number of people with Televisions: 3,100,000

Will books survive?

Seeing as how we were discussing about books surviving the digital, I found this article that believes books won't survive! It is believed they will be gone in approximately 25 years as generations that grow up with digital content won't use physical content.
The article explains what this entails for writers and the whole book industry.

Censoring the veil in Moroccan TV

This might look far from the main topics that are discussed in this blog, but what happened some weeks ago on the Moroccan TV 2M may shed the light on an aspect of the non-neutrality of the media in  Morocco as a particular  case, and in the world  in general.
In  fact, a veiled journalist was censored because she presented a reportage wearing her veil. In fact, the administration of the TV Channel  banned this journalist from doing  reportage and retrograded her as a redactor for the 13h45 news. This affair has created a buzz in the country, since it is a discrimination.
This affair showed, one more time, that the media are not and can never be neutral. In fact, if they  were so, they would have respected the freedom  of belief as well as the freedom  of clothing.  So, since the ideas that may be vehiculated by the clothes of this speaker  could not suit the ideas of the directoire of the TV channel, neither their visions and orientation,  The speaker was just banned from doing reportage in the land, and was retrograded to a simple news redactor, even though she is one of the oldest journalists in the channel.
From this little "anecdote" that is buzzing nowadays in Morocco, I do realize more  and more that the ideal of neutrality and objectivity of  media is just a myth that is commercialized in order to embellish the image of mass media.  No  matter what happens, the media will  remain a strong  ideological  tool that will   censor  any thing that is not conform  to their ideology.
